Dr. Bahaaldin Alsoufi is Professor of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery and the Erle Austin III Endowed Chair in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at the University of Louisville, where he also serves as Division Chief of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery, Co-Director of the Heart Institute, and Director of Heart Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support at Norton Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Alsoufi earned his medical degree from Damascus University School of Medicine in 1995 and completed his general surgery residency at the University of Massachusetts and thoracic surgery fellowship at Oregon Health & Science University. He subsequently pursued advanced training in valvular and aortic surgery at Toronto General Hospital and congenital cardiac surgery at The Hospital for Sick Children at the University of Toronto. He previously held faculty positions at Emory University and King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Riyadh.
His clinical and academic interests include complex neonatal cardiac surgery, single ventricle palliation, the Ross procedure, valvular repair, and pediatric heart transplantation. A prolific academic surgeon, Dr. Alsoufi has authored over 250 peer-reviewed publications, multiple book chapters, and more than 300 international presentations, including invited lectures and webinars.
Dr. Alsoufi is an active member of all major congenital and cardiovascular societies. He currently serves as Chair of the Research Committee and member of the Executive Committee of the Congenital Heart Surgeons’ Society (CHSS), member of the CHSS Congenital Program Accreditation Task Force, Co-Chair of the AATS Congenital Planning Committee, member of the AATS Educational Committee, Congenital Feature Editor of the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, and Congenital Editor of the STS Pediatric and Congenital Cardiac Surgery E-Book, among other leadership roles.
