Maximilian Pichlmaier is the Director of Aortic Surgery and Deputy Director of the Department of Cardiac Surgery at Ludwig-Maximilian University (LMU) Munich. Since 2023, he also serves as Co-Director of the University Aortic Centre Munich. He was appointed Associate Professor of Surgery at LMU in 2022.
Born in Munich in 1966, Dr. Pichlmaier studied in Munich, Cologne, and Repton (UK), before receiving a scholarship to read Physiology and Medicine at Cambridge University (MB BChir 1990, MA 1991). He served as a house officer to Sir Roy Calne at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge, and completed postgraduate studies in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg (MD 1994). He trained in cardiovascular surgery in Hannover and Kiel under H.G. Borst and A. Haverich, earning board certifications in General Surgery (1999), Vascular Surgery (2003), and Cardiac Surgery (2007).
Dr. Pichlmaier has held leadership roles including Director of Vascular Surgery (2002) and Director of Aortic Surgery (2007) at Medical School Hannover (MHH), where he also completed his PhD in 2011. His clinical and research expertise focuses on complex aortic surgery and cardiovascular procedures.
